(4) COROMANDEL PENINSULA

Drive south over the Bombay Hills and across the Hauraki Plains to the old gold mining city of Thames. Visit a bird hide on the coast and enjoy a guided introduction to gold mining in its heyday at the end of the 19th Century including a working Stamper Battery and go underground in an old gold mine. Continue along the Pohutukawa Coast to the town of Coromandel for a lunch break (own expense) before enjoying the unique Driving Creek Railway built by local potter and rail enthusiast, Barry Brickell. Ride the train through regenerating native forest up the hills for a panoramic view over the Peninsula and Hauraki Gulf. After returning to base and visiting the pottery we drive across the Peninsula to the charming seaside resort of Whitianga for a short visit and on to Hotwater Beach where for 2 hours either side of low tide you can dig your own thermal bath in the sand! (An optional exciting fast cruise is available to beautiful Cathedral Cove - extra expense and subject to weather on the day). We travel on to Tairua and return to Auckland.
