Day 1. Sunday 18 July. ARRIVE CHRISTCHURCH.
Arrive Christchurch and you will be transferred to your accommodation.
This tour connects by Intercity coach (Monday 8.05am to 4pm) or plane) from Queenstown and our FABULOUS FIORDLAND TOUR. Buy both tours and get your coach ticket from Queenstown to Christchurch on monday free. You will still visit the Antarctic Centre but miss the other Christchurch sightseeing.
Day 2. Monday 19 July. CHRISTCHURCH
We spend most of the day exploring the Garden City. See the Botanical Gardens, Museum, Avon River, New Brighton, Sumner Beach, Port Hills, Lyttelton, and the Antarctic centre OR Orama Wildlife Park
Day 3. Tuesday. 20 July. KAIKOURA AND HANMER SPRINGS.
Drive north to the charming resort of Kaikoura with the options of a whale watch cruise ($150 ocean cabin - $180 captains cabin) or flight ($350). Explore the town and visit the seal colony and caves. Maybe try some local crayfish for lunch - own expense). Mid afternoon we depart via the back roads to the resort of Hanmer Springs. Admission to the hot pools is included this evening.
Day 4. Wednesday. 21 July. HANMER SPRINGS - CHRISTCHURCH. (B)
Free morning to enjoy the resort, take an alpine walk, try ski-ing, or just relax in the hot pools again. Early afternoon we return to Christchurch via the Waipara Valley vineyards.
Day 5. Thursday. 22 July. CHRISTCHURCH - TRANZ ALPINE - GREYMOUTH - HOKITIKA. (B)
Transfer to the railway station and join the "Tranz Alpine" train departing 8.15am for one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world across the Canterbury Plains and climbing through the foothills of the Southern Alps criss crossing the Waimakariri River on the way to Arthurs Pass for a brief break. Travel through the Otira tunnel and descend into the rainforest of the West Coast. Pass Lake Brunner and the Grey River and arrive Greymouth 1.05pm.
Drive to the West Coast Treetop walkway for an exhilirating treetop adventure high in the ancient Rimu and Kamahi trees with great views (weather permitting) of Lake Mahinapua, Southern Alps, and Tasman Sea. Accommodation tonight at the Beachfront Hotel, overlooking the (often) wild Tasman Sea.
Day 6. Friday 23 July. HOKITIKA - PUNAKAIKI – CHRISTCHURCH (B)
Drive north to Greymouth and continue through the coal mining towns of the area to the amazing Punakaiki Rocks in the Paparoa National Park. Explore the area and return to Greymouth. Visit the re-created gold mining village of Shantytown to ride the train and try your hand at Gold Panning. Rejoin the "Tranz Alpine" for your journey across the Southern Alps to Christchurch. You will be transferred to your hotel.
Day 7 Saturday 24 July. . CHRISTCHURCH DEPART (B)
You will be transferred to the airport for departure.
