Day 1. Monday AUCKLAND - GRAND CHATEAU. (D)
Join our driver/guide for the drive to Taupo with free time for optional sightseeing en route - any admission fees extra. You have time for a visit to the Rangiriri Battle site - scene of the first battle of the Waikato land war in 1863, Zealong Tea Estate, and attractions in Taupo such as the Geological Museum, Huka jet boat ride, or bungy jump. Continue along the shores of Lake Taupo into the Tongariro National Park arriving at the Grand Chateau early afternoon. Visit the National Park headquarters and the "Top of the Bruce" to enjoy a "Sky Waka" ride to Knoll Ridge Cafe, 2020 metres above sea level. Enjoy a panoramic view over the volcanoes of the central North Island and Lake Taupo and as far as Mt Taranaki - weather permitting. There is time to take a walk to the Mt Ngaruhoe lookout (Mordor from Lord of the Rings). We do recommend a scenic flight over the mountains to really appreciate their grandeur. This evening dinner is included in the Ruapehu Restaurant.
Day 2. Tuesday. TONGARIRO - WHANGANUI - MT TARANAKI. (BD)
Drive the scenic Whanganui River Road via Pipriki and Jerusalem and cruise on the historic steamer Wairua (Built 1904) - subject to reintroduction. A jet boat ride will be given instead if the steamer is not sailing) to Whanganui. Tour the city and continue through Patea (home of the movie Poi Ei), Hawera, and Kaponga, to Dawson Falls Lodge, high on Mt Taranaki. Enjoy fabulous views over Taranaki and the Manawatu in fine weather.
Day 3. Wednesday. MT TARANAKI - NEW PLYMOUTH (BD)
Time for a mountain hike and enjoy the beauty of nature before visiting Parihaka battle site, Cape Egmont lighthouse and see the remains of lava flows from past eruptions, and the beautiful Pukeiti Rhododendron and Azalea Gardens. The Rhododendrons should still be in flower. Arrive New Plymouth late afternoon for 2 nights at Plymouth Hotel. . Dinner at the hotel.
Day 4. Thursday. NEW PLYMOUTH. (B)
Tour New Plymouth this morning including the Len Lye Centre, Pukekura Park, and the Waterfront walk. The afternoon is free to explore at your leisure. Dinner is not included tonight to let you support one of the local restaurants.
Day 5. Friday NEW PLYMOUTH - AUCKLAND (B)
Drive south to Hawera to visit the amazing Tawhiti Museum and drive the "Forgotten World Highway" to Whangamomona (declared a Republic in 1989). and on to Taumaranui. Return to Auckland.early evening. Optional visit to the Waitomo Glowworm Cave if most people wish - extra expense.
