Day 1. Monday AUCKLAND - GRAND CHATEAU. (High Tea and Dinner included.)
Option 1. "NORTHERN EXPLORER TO NATIONAL PARK.
(Please note Kiwirail have not advised the date of commencement of the "Northern Explorer" as at 17 May, 2020. Travel by mini bus from Auckland in the interim.
7.15am Meet your driver/guide at Auckland Strand Railway station. Baggage will be taken aboard our mini bus.
7.45am. Depart Auckland Strand railway station aboard the "Northern Explorer" train. Sit back and relax as you travel beside the Waikato River, through Ngaruawahia - home of the Maori King - and on through rich Waikato farmland into the king Country. Climb the famed Raurimu Spiral, a great feat of railway engineering, and arrival at National Park is scheduled for 1.15pm to meet up with your vehicle and driver/guide.
Option Two. MINI BUS TO NATIONAL PARK.
Travel in our mini bus with driver guide to National Park through the Waikato and King Country. You have time for a visit to the Rangiriri Battle site - scene of the first battle of the Waikato land war in 1863 OR Waitomo Glowworm Cave.
Drive from National Park to the Grand Chateau. Check in and meet in the Grand Lounge for High tea. Visit the National Park headquarters for an introduction to the area and this evening dinner is included in the Ruapehu Restaurant.
Day 2. TONGARIRO. (Breakfast and dinner included)
Drive to the Top of the Bruce and walk to the scene of Mordor from Lord of the Rings and enjoy a Skywaka ride to the Knoll Ridge cafe, 2020 metres above sea level. Enjoy a panoramic view over the volcanoes of the central North Island and Lake Taupo and as far as Mt Taranaki - weather permitting. The afternoon is free and there are many walks in the area from 30 to 120 minutes long. If you wish to do the Tongariro Crossing we can arrange a guided full day walk for you and visit the Top of the Bruce on monday or wednesday.
We do recommend a scenic flight over the mountains to really appreciate their grandeur.
Day 3. Wednesday. GRAND CHATEAU - TAUPO (Breakfast and dinner included)
Drive to Ohakune and visit the site of Gollums Pool then on to Waiouru with time to explore the Army Museum and continue over the Desert Road to Turangi and along the shores of Lake Taupo to Taupo town. Time for an exciting jet boat ride or bungy jump if you wish - extra expense. Explore the town before arriving at the Wairakei Resort. Dinner included and relax in the hotel thermal pools if you wish.
Day 4. Thursday. TAUPO - ROTORUA - AUCKLAND (Breakfast included)
Time for optional activities before we visit the Wairakei Geothermal valley and head north to the largest mud pool in New Zealand at Waiotapu and on to Rotorua for a few hours and back to Auckland arriving about 6pm.
We appreciate many New Zealanders have been to the thermal areas and activities before so we have not included any admissions today. You have time to explore the Waiotapu thermal area, in Rotorua, Te Puia thermal area, or Skyline gondola and whatever other activities are open. If you wish to visit Hobbiton we can do that in the afternoon on the way back to Auckland. and will arrive Auckland about 7pm. All activities extra expense.
Day 3. ARRIVE WELLINGTON.
Depart Taupo mid afternoon by scheduled Intercity coach and travel along the shores of Lake Taupo and across the Desert Road with fabulous views of the central North island volcanoes in fine weather..Arrive Wellington mid evening and you will be transferred to your accommodation.
Day 4. WELLINGTON (B)
Morning tour of the capital city includes the summit of Mt Victoria for a panoramic view over the city, South Coast beaches, Botanic Gardens, Parliament Buildings, a ride on the cable car, and Te Papa, Museum of New Zealand. Free afternoon for your own explorations.
Option: Full day Lord of the Rings tour including Weta Workshop tour and many locations from the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit Films including Outer Shire, Isengard, Rivendell, Dunharrow Plateau, River Anduin, Helms Deep, Minas Tirith, Plus visit Weta cave Museum and the "Window into the Workshop" exhibition. - extra cost $100
Day 5. WELLINGTON DEPART (B)
