7.45am. Check in with Great Sights hostess at the Skycity coach terminal, 102 Hobson Street, behind Skytower. (Inner city hotel pickups if required). 

Day 1.   AUCKLAND - HOBBITON - WAITOMO - ROTORUA.      (L)

8.00am Depart aboard your Great Sights tour coach. Drive south over the Bombay Hills to the Shires Rest, gateway to the Hobbiton Movie Set. Join your local specialist guide for a short drive through part of the picturesque 500 hectare (1,250 acre) sheep and cattle farm and your guide will escort you through the 10 acre Movie Set. See the Hobbit Holes, Bag End (Bilbo and Frodo Baggins home), Party Tree, Lake, The Mill, and the Green Dragon Inn and learn how the Waikato farmland was transformed into the Shire from Middle Earth. Enjoy a cold drink at the Green Dragon Inn and a buffet lunch fit for Hobbits in the Green Dragon Inn Party Marquee. Continue on to Waitomo Caves for a tour of the main limestone cave to see the stalactites and stalagmites and cruise through the glowworm grotto (45 minute tour). Continue to Rotorua arriving about 6.00pm. You will be taken to your accommodation for 2 nights with buffet breakfast.

Dinner is not included and the evening is free to visit 'Eat Street' or other restaurant or relax In the thermal pool.

Day 2.                             ROTORUA                                              (BD)

7.15-7.30am. You will be picked from the hotel by Great Sights. 

Enjoy a guided tour of the Te Puia thermal area to see bubbling mud pools, famed Pohutu geyser, and visit the carving and weaving school. Continue to the Agrodome farm show to see a sheep being shorn, cow being milked, and sheep dog working. Walk through the native forest at Rainbow Springs Nature Park and you will almost certainly be able to see our endangered native kiwi bird, and other New Zealand wildlife. Take a ride on the gondola to the Skyline cafe high on the mountain for a panoramic view over Lake Rotorua and the opportunity to ride the luge if you wish (luge extra expense). Return to the hotel mid afternoon and you have free time to relax in the thermal pool or explore the town.

5.45- 6.10pm You will be picked up from the hotel by Mitai Maori Village bus. Enjoy a fabulous evening with the Mitai whanau (family). See a war canoe paddled up the stream, enjoy a scintillating introduction to pre european Maori cuilture and dance and a traditional steam cooked hangi dinner. You will be taken back to your hotel about 9pm.

Day 3.                    ROTORUA - TAUPO – AUCKLAND                              (B)

Please check out and leave your bags at reception. 

Drive south to the Waiotapu thermal area – most colourful in New Zealand. Explore the coloured terraces and see Lady Knox geyser play. Continue through part of the Kaiangaroa pine forest to Taupo. Visit the Aratiatia Rapids, Wairakei Geothermal Valley, Honey Hive, and Huka waterfall. There is time for an exciting jet boat ride, optional bungy jump, or scenic flight by float plane over the volcanic mountains and ski fields of the central North Island, and lunch. All activities and lunch own expense. Return to the hotel between 3pm and 4pm. 

5.00pm.  Depart Rotorua aboard Great Sights Coach arriving Auckland 8.10pm. You will be dropped off at any inner city accommodation.

Day 3.               ARRIVE WELLINGTON. 

Depart Taupo mid afternoon by scheduled Intercity coach and travel along the shores of Lake Taupo and across the Desert Road with fabulous views of the central North island volcanoes in fine weather..Arrive Wellington mid evening and you will be transferred to your accommodation.

Day 4.                         WELLINGTON                    (B)                      

Morning tour of the capital city includes the summit of Mt Victoria for a panoramic view over the city, South Coast beaches, Botanic Gardens, Parliament Buildings, a ride on the cable car, and Te Papa, Museum of New Zealand. Free afternoon for your own explorations.  

Option: Full day Lord of the Rings tour including Weta Workshop tour and many locations from the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit Films including Outer Shire, Isengard, Rivendell, Dunharrow Plateau, River Anduin, Helms Deep, Minas Tirith, Plus visit Weta cave Museum and the "Window into the Workshop" exhibition. - extra cost $100

Day 1. AUCKLAND - WAITOMO CAVES - OTOROHANGA KIWI HOUSE - HOBBITON - ROTORUA                                       (L)
Depart Auckland 7.45am and drive south over the Bombay Hills and along the banks of the Waikato River to Visit Otorohanga Kiwi House to see our unique endangered native kiwi birds at feeding time, the ancient Tuatara reptile, and walk through the largest dome aviary in New Zealand to see our native Kereru (Wood Pigeon) Kakariki (Parrot), and other native birds
Continue to Waitomo Caves for a guided tour through the main limestone cave and cruise through the glowworm grotto. (45 minute tour)
Enjoy a barbecue buffet lunch at Roselands farm restaurant - beef, chicken, fish, salads, cake and coffeee plus a taste of kumara chips. 

Visit Lake Karapiro, home of New Zealand rowing, and the Karapiro hydro dam on the Waikato River, at 425 km this is New Zealand's longest river. 

Continue to Hobbiton and the Shires Rest to join your special guided tour of the Hobbiton Movie set, made famous by "Lord of the Rings, and "Hobbit" films. Visit the lake front and Government Gardens and Kuirau Park thermal area before enjoying the Agrodome farm show to see sheep being shorn, a cow being milked, and sheep dogs working as well as taking a farm tour to meet the animals and visit the Kiwifruit orchard.
This evening enjoy an exciting presentation of Maori culture and hangi steam cooked dinner.

Day 3.           ROTORUA - TAUPO - AUCKLAND OR                                                        WELLINGTON (B).
Drive south to the Taupo area. Visit the Aratiatia Rapids, Huka Falls, Honey Hive, bungy site (try if you wish), and Taupo lakefront. There is time for an optional exciting jet boat ride on the Waikato River. or float plane or helicopter flight over the central North island volccanoes. Return to Auckland mid evening
You may depart Taupo early afternoon by scheduled coach arriving Wellington mid evening ending at coach depot. No change in cost.
